What is AutoGPT and how does it work?
What it is
AutoGPT, released in 2023, was one of the first popular autonomous agents. You give it a goal in plain English, and it tries to achieve it without step-by-step instructions. It uses GPT-4 to plan, reason, and call tools.
It's open-source and available on GitHub. The project sparked widespread interest in agents but also highlighted limitations like getting stuck, hallucinating, and burning through API credits.
How it works
AutoGPT runs a loop: it takes your goal, generates a list of tasks, then for each task it decides which tool to use (web search, code execution, file I/O). After each action, it observes the result and updates its plan.
It stores short-term memory in a vector database and can spawn sub-agents for subtasks. The loop continues until the goal is met or it hits a limit. In practice, it often needs human intervention.
- Goal input → task list generation
- Tool selection and execution
- Result observation and memory update
- Iteration until completion or failure
- Optional human feedback at each step
Common mistakes
- Expecting it to run fully autonomously without supervision; it often derails.
- Assuming it's production-ready; it's more of a research prototype.
- Underestimating API costs when it runs many iterations.
